| BIRDS OF THE DANUBE DELTA TOUR 4 days / 3 nights Exploring the wilderness of the Danube Delta is the experience of a lifetime. One of Europes best kept secrets, the Delta is a world class conservation area and a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. There is no other place in Europe that encompasses the diversity and concentration of nature, as the Delta in a setting resplendent with picturesque landscapes. The vast expanse of waterways, reed-beds, islands and forests create the perfect habit for a unique collection of mammals, reptiles and insects. This unique eco-system is home to over 300 species of birds, 60 varieties of fish and 1,200 species of plants and trees. Located in eastern Romania, at the very edge of Europe, the Danube Delta embodies 5,800 square kilometers of lakes, forests, reed-beds, and waterways which mark the final journey of the mighty river as it flows into the Black Sea. A World Heritage Site and
a Man and Biosphere Reserve the Danube Delta is one of the
last surviving great wilderness areas of Europe and is most
certainly its best wildlife sanctuary. Day 01: (Friday) Arrive at
Bucharest's Henri Coanda Airport, board a luxury vehicle for the 180 mile
transfer to Delta Nature Resort, passing through picturesque villages
and small towns and getting a first experience of fascinating rural Romania.
Once you have checked in and are comfortable at the Hotel you may attend
a briefing by the resorts exploration team. The day ends with a relaxing
dinner at "Feathers". Later in the day, board a boat trip to the Purchelu mixed bird colony close to Tulcea. During this two hour trip you will see a number of the Delta's bird species a such as spoonbills, cormorants, ibis, herons, egrets, and - with a little luck - the white tailed fishing eagle. Depending on season you may see a number of nests with young chicks. Dinner is a royal treat: sample the famous Romanian Beluga Caviar - said to be amongst the best in the world - and feast on traditional Romanian specialties. Day 03: (Sunday) A venture into the heart of the natural reserve. After breakfast we take you to Tulcea, transfer into a boat and explore some of the main channels and lakes of the Delta. In addition to visiting the largest colony of white pelicans in Europe, you can spot most of the birds of the area and navigate the narrow channels that connect the lakes and reed-beds. Lunch is a traditional Delta fish soup, freshly cooked and served on one of the islands en-route. Before returning to the resort, spend some time in Tulcea to see the museums of natural history, anthropology and archeology. Back at the resort enjoy a relaxing massage or a dip in the pool before dinner at Feathers. Day 04: (Monday) After breakfast, departure for Bucharest in time for your return flight. (meals on the flight) Tours must be booked at least 45 days prior to arrival.
