"...a journey through Feiran is to pass through an entire chapter of the Old Testament itself..."
Few places are as steeped in Biblical mystery as the great Wadi Feiran - the Sinai's largest Wadi and one of it's most archeologically important stretches of terrain. It was here, according to locals, scholars, and legend, that Moses struck a rock with his staff, bringing forth a spring so his people could drink. Feiran is also the site of Rafadim, the fabled oasis where the Hebrews camped and battled the Amelecites. For the pilgrims and believers who have been coming to this Wadi for centuries, a journey through Feiran is to pass through an entire chapter of the Old Testament itself, Exodus 17. Given such prominence in the Old Testament, it is no surprise that Feiran is littered with the ruins of dozens of ancient churches; some dating back to the 4th century AD, when Feiran began to develop into a major religious center for monks and pilgrims, many on their way to Mt. Sinai and St. Catherine's Monastery further east. The Wadi's chief religious sites are the rock from which Moses drew water, which convention places at the western entrance to the oasis, and Mount Tahoun, which Moses supposedly used as an observation point to view the battle with the Amelecites. Atop the mountain is an ancient cross, and the ruins of a small church dating back to the 4th century. End the day at the foot of Mt. Sinai. Overnight Mt. Sinai at St. Catherine's Plaza hotel. Please know that the entire tourism industry in Egypt is underpaid and overworked. The average MONTHLY salary for the waiters, bellmen, front desk staff, etc. at hotels and on cruises is $100-$150. This is why everyone is looking for tips.
When you get good service think about rewarding it.
If you don’t get good service then do not tip them anything.
Other costs to expect
bottled water at hotels or on the cruise: $1 to $3 for a small bottle, $2.50-$5 for a large bottle. NOTE: This is filtered water. If you order perrier it will cost more.
coffee or tea: 50 cents
alcoholic drinks:
beer: $3 per bottle
wine: local $4 to $6 per glass. imported will be more $$.
liquor: local $5 per cocktail, imported $8-$15 per cocktail
NON included meals per person (in hotel ala carte restaurants) Lunch $7 to $15, dinner $7 to $20 (think Applebees/Chili’s prices)
Fine dining restaurants would be more.
Buffets: lunch buffet $12-$20, dinner buffet $20-$30
So on a tour of 14 days, similar to the one described above you would probably
have minimum tips: $95 per adult plus
12 lunches averaging $10 per person ($120)
13 dinners averaging $20 per person ($260)
NOTE: Many hotels discount meals for children under 12.
Also there are a number of family style and fast food places in Cairo, Luxor and Aswan where meal costs would be less.
Ask your guide!
This does not include alcoholic beverages nor souvenirs.
