CENTRO LEON CULTURAL CENTER

Origin

In 1964 Eduardo Leon Jimenes conducted the first Art Contest with the dual intention of promoting the development of the visual arts and to stimulate creativity in the younger generation of artists. In the inaugural speech when Don Eduardo Leon Asensio anticipated that, over the years, it would have an important collection of visual arts that would demand the establishment of an institution to be quoted on a permanent basis.

This prediction became reality in 1999 when the Foundation Eduardo Leon Jimenes, chaired by Don José A. Leon Asensio initiated preparatory work for the construction of the Cultural Centre Eduardo Leon Jimenes. Immediately began to receive donations spontaneous, as well as loans, transfers and acquisitions of major art collections, archaeological, etnológicas and literature, all related issues specific to the country's culture.

To organize these valuable collections and their ways of handling and disposal of the public, were hired the services of Professional Consultants and Advisors (CAP), under the leadership of Rafael Emilio Yunén and architecture of the Sun, headed by Pedro Jose Borrell. Together with a team of specialists in various areas, the two firms proposed an original vision to integrate institutional collections to the scientific documentation and the production of cultural projects and services.

Mission

The Centre Leon develops creativity through research, protection, display and dissemination of artistic and cultural achievements Dominican and everything that contributes to the formation of a society more sensitive to the transcendent values, more proud of itself and capable of actively participate in improving the quality of life of the nation within the Caribbean context.

Vision

The Centre Leon works to become one of the most comprehensive cultural centers in the Caribbean and Latin America in the documentation and implementation of cultural offerings and products.
The Centre Leon looking encourage increased interest, the public and institutions specializing in the cultural field, to facilitate the recognition of cultural communities, actors cultural traditions and vanguards, which focuses on the quality and diversity of currents, ideas and artistic styles, by generating dynamic learning, accessibility, participation and cultural production based on the information and communication technologies.

Objectives

  •  Facilitating various places and modes of thought-action on three themes: identity, creativity and habitat within their respective contexts Dominicans and the Caribbean.
  •  Organize, investigate and expose collections and art objects and anthropological converging in a pluralistic representation on the identities Dominican and Caribbean.
  •  Enhancing the role of the arts, especially the visual arts, the formation of cultural identities, emphasizing the relationship and the role that they articulated expressive culture.
  •  Causing participant in the questions and answers from the exhibitions, cultural contexts and the potential of art to recreate and questioning culture.
  •  Developing and provide a public forum to facilitate the exchange between communities, groups, artists and institutions for the use, enjoyment and production projects and cultural and artistic activities, as well as the reflection-action on livability.
  •  Encourage actions, strategies and collaborative programmes with public and private institutions that have programs in various communities national, international and regional initiatives to manage to be performed in different locations and contexts.
